Today I found an empty coolant overflow tank, and milky stuff on the bottom of my oil cap. I fear the worst. So as I reasonable thinking man, I’m thinking maybe I’ll replace my car with. 100,000 mile WRX. cuz you know blow Head gaskets Are bad mmmm’k. But seriously this thing is pretty, and I’d love a wagon.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Seriously tho if the VR-4 goes have a blown head gasket I think I’ll be ready to throw in the towel. I love my car I really do, but I can’t keep up with it. I don’t have the money to pay some one to work on it, and I don’t have the time to do it myself.

Ouch... hopefully it isn’t the end for your VR-4.
If you do pick up a Subaru, mind its head gaskets as well.

Nooooo! Not the Galant

I’m sure some other nut will be willing to take it on even if I decide I’m done with it. I just know that with the money I spent on maintaining it last year I could have been making payments on something that wasn’t on jackstands for 4 months. A 12 year old turbocharged Subaruisnt the smartest way to go tho. More likely I’ll get a Mustang.

That WRX looks good. That gen and body style are so subtle.

At least you didn’t blow a seal.

“No mods whatsoever!”
- Has a boost gauge
- Has an aftermarket grill
- Random picture of a CRV sat-nav
But actually, WRXs are awesome. Wagons are awesome. WRX wagons are extra awesome.
EDIT: Wait shit that’s a Prius sat-nav

That boost gauge is OEM I believe. May have been an option but it’s a Subaru part. https://www.subieautoparts.com/product/2002-2007-subaru-impreza-wrx-sti-lamco-boost-gauge-assembly-oem/

Lol if you are worried about a head gasket why are you looking at a subaru that is prime mileage for blowing a head gasket? It must be my luck but all four Subarus I looked at, including the one I bought, either had a bad head gasket or was recently replaced. Thankfully mine was of the recently replaced and included the timing belt, to the tune of a $4k repair incurred by the previous owner.

Ouch. Yeah this car I saw just out in Lalaland day dreaming. Unless it has had the timing belt and headgaskets done recently

I just want to point out that buying a used WRX because your car has a blown head gasket is like saying “Right, I think beer makes me an alcoholic so I will stick with the 100 proof bourbon, thank you very much!”
SUcks though that the VR-4 is acting up. But just keep in mind that if you don’t like working on the VR-4, the boxer 4 will make sure that a lot of more common tasks are the biggest pains in the ass to deal with.
I can’t believe I’m saying this but.....an A4 Avant might be a more liveable vehicle if you can find one with the 2.0T. It’s decently reliable and gets okay mileage while having a nice power and torque curve.

I believe that is the oem optional boost gauge. I know the optional one from subaru is a tacked on shitty gauge and that looks the part.

Yeah I highly doubt I’d buy the subie. But it is a wagon. And I do hate sedans.

It’s certainly possible I did just get unlucky lol. But yeah if timing belt was not done, then it is of course due soon. More importantly considering the area it’s located, would be to check for rust. Otherwise it’s a good price if clean, and good negotiation about the timing belt should bring that down.

This plan will go swimmingly for you.

But, but Wagon. The other option is more like this. Cheaper, more reliable, but not as much space or turbo. https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ram/ctd/d/2001-mazda-mx-5-miata-ls/6436660983.html

Oh shit I forgot they did that.

Ruh-roh!
Don’t buy the Subie. Cool car, no doubt, but you know better.

For all the people saying OMG head gaskets are going to go even worse on the Subie. They had one go on all of theirs. Ask them first if it was a turbo motor. Those didn’t have the same gasket issues like the NA engines. The head gasket problem is something that gets painted as a general Subaru thing but it wasn’t an issue on the turbo motor.

I need to point this out for the benefit of everyone:
Turbo Subarus don’t blow head gaskets.
Spin rod bearings, bust ringlands, blow turbos, yes, but they don’t blow head gaskets, at least not any more than any other car.

And most of the turbo motor problems only happen when you start modifying, which I wouldn’t do. This car would have s big more power and a better AWD system than nun Galant. And I’m still scared and very amused by they 200hp in the Galant

Today I found an empty coolant overflow tank, and milky stuff on the bottom of my oil cap.
Milky stuff on the bottom of the oil cap isn’t necessarily bad, it can happen in any engine (Get a little water vapor mixed with the oil vapor, and it gathers under the cap where it’s cool enough that the water doesn’t evaporate).
Same with an empty coolant overflow tank, it can be caused by a lot of things.
But if you have milkshake on the oil dipstick or in the coolant overflow or in the radiator, yeah... that’s a major problem.

That’s a good point. My dipstick wasn’t milky

You reside with HammerheadFistpunch on the wrong side of this opinion RE: sedans.
Actually, I like wagons just fine, but I don’t like my cargo area visible to anyone who wants to look. Yes, there are cargo covers, but still. I like trunks. And I’m old-fashioned.
![]() 01/12/2018 at 18:36 |

I jut like my cargo area to LARGE

I think this is one of the best looking wagons ever.

Just swap in WRX suspension

I don’t need that to go to Costco.
